LCD not running at native resolution

Just got a Samsung 172T 17" LCD. I've noticed it's running at a resolution of 800x600 rather than its native resolution of 1280x1024. I'm running in analog mode. If I change it to 1280x1024 in my control panel all the fonts shrink to a very small size. The OSD on the monitor is also showing 800x600 but does not allow me to change the setting from the menu. This is a 4 1/2 yr old IBM Aptiva with an ATI Rage Pro video card. Is it because I have an older video card that can't support this resolution? I will be getting a new PC shortly that will have a video card w/DVI out so that I can run in digital mode which will hopefully be my solution.

Don't get it. You say you changed the resolution to 1280x1024, which is the native resolution of the monitor. So what's the problem?
Yes the fonts will be smaller, but you can change that in the control panel (don't remember where). Sounds to me like everything is working fine.

yeah, PCHPlayer is right, it's working fine. Fonts are tiny at 1280X1024 on a 15" LCD, and even a 17" LCD. In my opinion, LCD's native resolutions are a bit too high, but they have to do that just to satisfy the people who run it at that resolution, since you can't set the display to a higher resolution than the native.

The only difference between running at native and non-native resolutions is that there's a bit of cropping/shrinking of the screen. It doesn't "hurt" the monitor or anything.

Although, when you do not run it at native, the image will be a bit blurrier overall. If you want the sharpest and clearest picture, run it at native. Remember, you can use Cleartype or make the Windows fonts bigger.
