LCD noise question...

Should my LCD (Planar 201M) be completely silent? There is a low hiss that comes from it - mainly from the top of the LCD (I have to stand up over the LCD in order for it to be easily heard). It's much louder when I'm using the monitor compared to when it's in suspend mode. Also, whether the monitor is on or off, it still makes a very light hiss when plugged in.

- Planar tech support says it should be silent. They have sent me a second one which does the same thing.
- I have tried both monitors in every accesible outlet in the house - all with the same results.
- The built in speakers are also muted since I don't use them.

Do I have a problem with my electrical or is this normal?

The built in speakers are also muted since I don't use them.

A "hissing" definately sounds like a problem associated with speakers. Even if you have them muted, make sure they aren't even plugged in, they'll probably only hiss if you have power running through them, and when they're unnecessarily on an LCD monitor (I'm not quite sure) but there will probably always be power running through the built in speakers. Is there an option to turn down the volume of the speakers aside from just "muting" them? If so try turning the volume down all the way.

Otherwise I don't know what would be making such noise. The chances of you getting two defective monitors in a row (assuming they were taken from a large population of relatively defect free monitors) - well lets just say your chances are very low and their is a problem on the other end of the monitor that is causing the problem or else its common for all monitors of your model.

Speaking of speakers, I had a similar problem with my amp and sub. They would always emmit a humming noise too. It turned out it was caused by ground loop effect. The problem was remedied with a $15 Ground Loop Isolator at Radio Shack. I'm predicting that this is a similar problem, but I can't seem to eliminate it no matter what I unplug.

Also, it's definetely not coming from the speakers. I can only hear it when I put my head above the monitor (where vents are) or in back of the monitor.

I had a similar problem with a Del 17 E171fp monitor. Turns out the problem was not the monitor itself, but my power supply/surge protector simply could not handle the load, considering several other devices were plugged into it at the same time. I simply upgraded to a better surge protector, swapped some other devices to another outlet, and problem diasappeared. Of course it may not be that simple for you, but its worth a shot.
