LCD Monitors

I have 2 questions on LCD monitors:

1) I notice that both 17" and 19" LCD's usually have a native resolution of 1280X1024.
Is 1280X1024 too high a resolution for 17", or is 1280X1024 too low a resolution for 19"??

2) How bad is it, in terms of quality, when you set a resolution on the vid card (assuming analog output) at one that is lower than the native resolution on the LCD? I have a 15" LCD @ 1024X768 and I notice that when you go at 800X600 or 640X480 the image looks horrible, but then again its an older model with a slow response time.

Suggestions??

IMO, 1280x1024 is a fine resolution for both. 17"-19" isn't THAT big of a difference, and trying to read text at a non-native resolution == blurry mess, even today.

Now the interpolation algoritims have gotten good enough that games are okay at non-native resolutions.

i honestly think that 1280x1024 is too small for either. i used to run that on a 17" CRT just fine, and it was an inch smaller than the 17" LCD. i ran 1600x1200 on a 19" CRT, which was a little hard to see at times but again it is an inch smaller than the 19" LCD. 1280x1024 on a 19" LCD is a waste, IMHO (unless you're blind, then it might help).

right now i'm more than arm's length from my notebook's 1400x1050 14" screen and can see this text just fine.
