LCD monitors with 16:9 Aspect ratio widescreen display

Hi,

I have a laptop in office which has a 15.4" WXGA and has a widescreen display of 16:9 aspect ratio -specially meant for DVD movies.

Would it be possible to have a LCD monitor ( for my desktop) which supports this widescreen display with this 16:9 aspect ratio. I am a movie freak and watch loads of DVD's!

Are there any LCD's 17' with the above specs. If yes, Then are these in the same price range as similar 4:3 aspect ratio usuals like Samsung 710N , BENQ FP715G etc..
Further is a WXGA(wide Screen) display LCD ok for normal tasks like Emailing , Documenting and Moderate gaming..?

I believe most 17" LCD's are 5:4 aspect ratio. Good luck finding a widescreen one that size. You may want to check out a larger monitor.

dell 2005fpw, I have it and love it. It is 20" and is 16:10, but say for watching high definition I just stretch it out and it looks completely normal. With widescreen dvd's there are small bars on the top and bottom. Awesome lcd!

Take a lookj at the big Apple Cinema 23" LCD - it is a wide screen. Actually you can use any LCD - no reason you have to fill the top and bottom black areas.

Bar81 and n7 the philips and the sharp monitors that you recommended seem to be out of my budget i guess..

Oh Well, i guess a widescreen would not be so great for reading documents online( something that i do a lot).. So movies will have to take a back seat. And i guess i could spend the extra $150 elsewhere on the pc!

Finally i have chosen LCD's.. 17" Samsung 710 N, SAMSUNG 713N and BENQ FP71G..

Can anyone comment on these or recommend some other 17" LCD within a roughly similar price range..

I was looking at the 710N. The main drawback that m,ost people seem to mention is a lack of DVI. It is still a decent monitor, though. Maybe you could try waiting for some good deals on the Dell 1905FP. If you wait a month or so, they should be available in the $250-300 range. Not much more than the 710N and a larger screen ands superior response time. Not bad...

Yes..the sore point with the Samsung 710N and the BenQ FP 71G is the lack of DVI. ALso the Response time is 12ms. There are others with response time 8ms.(i am not very rigid on the response time since i don't do much of gaming)

I read here that lack of DVI i/p is a majot setback. As far as the Dell is concerned - a 19" LCD wud be too large for viewing close and for document reading.

I found these monitors Samsung SyncMasterTM 710T-Black. THis one has a DVI and 12ms response time.
Also BenQ FP783 has a DVI and similar response time.

Any idea about these or any other 17" LCD's that you would care to recommend.

I have a Samsung 172W in pristine shape with no dead pixels that I am considering to sell...
widescreen 17" lcd 1280x768 resolution, DVI, VGA, etc.

Can you tell me where you are from and for how much are you willing to sell the 172W for.

I guess the Wide LCD's may not be in my budget - the thought of purchasing it was more out of ignorance of the issues.

I guess the Wide LCD's would also serve as impediments for onscreen reading ,documents and web pages- something i do a lot of.

I hope i can narrow down on a 17" LCD this week.. IT would be great if someone can recommend one..THe following are the models that i am considering..

DELL UltraSharp 1704FPT,Samsung 710 N, SAMSUNG 713N and BENQ FP71G ..These are of similar price range.

Samsung SyncMasterTM 710T-Black and BENQ FP71G.. Both of these are in the higher price category.

I would especially like comments on DELL UltraSharp 1704FPT - coz it does not seem to prohibitively expensive and has very decent specs.. How Good is it?

I'd sell the 172w for $250 plus actual shipping cost. No rip off shipping.
Comes with original CDs, VGA cable, DVI cable, AC Adapter, WALL MOUNT KIT, and original box. Basically everything that came with it , pretty much like new.
I never touched the lcd screen either.

I don't see why they don't make screens with actual HDTV resolution. 1920x1080 = 16:9. Widescreen LCDs are all 16:10 at best ... some of them are completely strange aspects.

Because these types of monitors are mainly for desktop use, so the extra few pixels of vertical res is nice.

1080i (1920x1080) is not necissarily "standard" HDTV res. I don't think there is anything being broadcasted in this resolution yet. Typical HDTV is in 720p. or 1280x720.

Who would want a desktop display with only 720 vertical res? Not me.

Besides, it makes for better viewing of 4:3 aspect television.

Decided to go for a normal 4:3 Aspect ratio.. I think a 16:10 aspect ratio will be unsuitable for normal document reading and web surfing.

Might go in for a Samsung 713N with 8ms response time or a BENQ FP71E+ with again with 8ms. ANy comments on these two by someone whose used them..Both are dirt cheap.Figured i can use the extra money elsewhere on the pc..

Besides already have a Compaq Laptop with 15" Widescreen.. Guess i will have to watch my DVD's on that!
