i was at best buy yesterday ,talking to an (older 65 ish) salesman about crt's and lcd's anyway he told me that the lcd's backlight only lasts about a year and that they had a lot of people that were mad and returning them:Q

seriously anybody heard this or had to replace the light yet?

i was really looking to getting one but after hearing that (any body know if this is true?) maybe i will be getting a newer 21 inch crt. I mean it seams that lcd's are extremely upper gamer/computer user elite especially the bigger ones (700-1000 dollar range) now if i gotta add what 200-300 more after 1 year for the backlight that just blows:frown:

especially if that thing about the warranty is true where the light is considered to be "not covered"
due to its life expectations:|

i was looking at getting the lcd to use with my older 21 inch but the guy said that they recommend turning off the lcd to make the light last longer and i don't like turning off and on things i use a lot at different times of the day as that to me seems harder on the components than leaving them on.

so please anybody that has an answer feel free to respond it will be much appreciated as i would love to own an lcd but i guess that worried me a lot

If you have the real estate for the crt, then get it!

i have had my lcd for a year and a half now, and my friend has had 2 of the same model for about the same time as well. So far no backlight problems. I am unsure of the rumor on not covering backlights in the warranty, but I can check for you when I get home. I got LCD because I just simply dont have the space for a monster crt, and crt's tend to give me headaches while this lcd is great (but it does make my eyes red).

First of all, when your computer goes into powersave, it will turn off the backlight of your LCD.
Secondly, I know notebooks that have lived for 6+ years and the backlight is still going. I really don't think they die that soon, although in rare cases it may happen, just as a CRT could die within a year.

Salespeople sometimes say the darndest things. ;)

To solve the "warranty" issue, make sure you get a nice LCD w/ a 3 yr backlight warranty. ;)
