Currently I am using a NEC fe950 flat screen monitor and I dont know if I should get a lcd to replace it.
Is 85hz enough?

My primary concern is the health of my eyes. Since I already wear glasses, I dont want my perscription to get worse every year. (whichi is happening t0 me)

So, is lcd that much better for the eyes? I know it virtually emits no radiation. I have also heard that the refersh rate for lcd monitors are different from crt, is that true?

Also, i am getting a budget lcd monitor, (samsung 151s) , is text or pictures going to be better than my current monitor, or worse?

Yes, by all means if you are concerned about your eyes. (I can look at my LCD all day and not have tired eyes)

You have to remember that LCDs don't have a refresh rate because the backlight is always on. This is one of the key reasons they are better for the eyes.

I wouldn't give my LCD up for any other monitor.

Your monitor might not be the problem with your eyes, it could be genetic, and your eyes will eventually stop getting worse (it happened to me).

As for the LCD, going the cheap route might cost you. You have to look at how well the LCD performs. There is no refresh rate, but LCDs are rated on how fast they can change the pixels. Too slow and you get ghosting (you move your cursor across the screen and you see multiple cursors because the LCD cannot keep up). Also, text quality can be significantly lower on a low end LCD compared to a high end CRT.

I have a higher-end LCD (Planar) and I wouldn't trade it for any CRT. Before you buy the LCD, make sure you get a chance to sample it and see how it looks before you buy it.

I have a Dell 1702FP and wouldn't trade it for anything either. Great LCD, pleasant on my eyes (and I wear glasses too).

i believe that a LCD refreshes at about 50% the rate as a CRT does. some people cant stand it, but whatever floats your boat....

i was kinda afraid about my eyes, and i used to use a laptop, and LCDs are nice. but i use a 21" monitor at 1024x768 so i dont think its really a problem of the sharpness, but the size of things. if you run the res i do on a monitor this size, you eyes will be fine. plus a 21" will cost you less than an LCD for the most part

I have an 18" Planar, and it keeps up just dandy in FPS games, video, whatever.
DVI connection as well, which is incredible compared to analog.

Look at "pixel response time" when comparing LCD monitor specs.
And, if the manufacturer doesn't list this spec, then it probably stinks.

just sold off my 21" CRT and picked up a 17" LCD for $500. image quality is sharp, i can play jedi outcast for hours or watch VCDs, and the amount of space i've recovered on my desk makes me wish i'd done it sooner. ;)

to address the FPS issue, i'm playing jedi outcast at 1280 x 1024 x 16 @ 75hz and the image quality looks fantastic. no ghosting or other such effects to detract from the game. vid card is a first gen. visiontek geforce 3 card.

my dell 1702FP keeps up just fine in games and video, no ghosting at all anywhere.

LCDs have a relatively low response time.. i.e. how many images they can display per second, this specification and contrast ratios (brightness) are two areas where lcd technology is improving. I have an 18" Sony LCD and simply love it.l I don't play fps games though. Of the newer LCDs, I believe the Viewsonic models have improved the contrast ratios and response times to a point where fps games may work OK....

Here's a discussion of this fps issue here.

If you can live without the high fps (say 40 to 50 images / sec ), I'd say go for it. They are beautiful and easy on the eyes. Be sure to get a display with the DVI interface, it makes a big difference in clarity on my Sony, which has both an analog and a DVI interface. :)

If you get one with a 25 ms response time (or less), you should be fine.
