LCD Monitor users weigh in......

I'm building a system for my wife shortly after Christmas. Due to desktop size limitation she's going to need an LCD monitor. This is just a basic system for everyday stuff,no huge, expensive gaming/Cad Cam monitor is needed. She uses a laptop from work so I'm guessing even a 15" LCD is somewhat larger than what she's used to looking at.

I've looked at several on the web,a few on display at Office Depot etc. Viewsonic has always made good monitors, their LCD's looked pretty good at Office Depot the other day. So..let me know what kind of LCD you have, how it performs, the price blah,blah.... Thanks in advance

Samsung 173P...stunning images, sharp as a tack, great color. Very slight ghosting in top games, and expensive ($630 4 months ago).

when i built my sister her comp for college i got her a 15in nec (i cant remember the model but i think it was right around 300 on newegg last time i checked). for the price it was definitely not too bad of a deal, and she is far from a gamer so i wasnt too concerned about ghosting and such. all in all it is not a bad choice for the average user, but if i were buying a lcd for myself i wouldnt get anything short of a fp2001.

Forget that POS. If you are going to spend $600 bucks get the Dell 21'.

Very nice LCD.

Its not a POS, but it is very pricy. I've never seen Dell carry a self-branded 21" LCD but they do have the 2001FP for usually just under 600$ if you catch the hot deal.

i use dual viewsonic vp171b's. probably a bit more than your wife needs from what you said, but the picture on them is beautiful, and they look very slick with the narrow bezels (~.7" around the whole screen)

We all have opinions, but yours is off base. The 173P is not a POS. It's a terrific monitor, although very expensive. If you mean it is not a good value, then I would agree with you.

Geez, someone asks about 15" LCD's and next thing you know people are spouting out about $600 monitors?

I'm in the market for a non-advid user LCD as well and found a fair number of good choices for $250 or so (17" models). I'm leaning toward a Hyundai L30S for $255 shipped From Newegg.

It's gotten good reviews and is cheaper than most.

Good luck.

For the past few years, nearly all the systems I have built included LCD's. I have bought the least expensive brand (with a name I recognize) in the size my customer wanted and have had zero complaints.

The overwhelming majority of computer users cannot discriminate between the picture quality of a high end LCD versus a low end.

Stick with a brand you've heard of and you will be fine.

I'm with you. That type of response is all too prevalent here. There are people here that think anything less than a $500 graphics card is a grievous mistake.

People use computers very differently and for many different reasons.

for non gaming, just standard use, almost any lcd will be nice 😛
get dvi as it helps to make text look more crisp (IMO) but it isn't critical to do

I have a 15in Gateway FPD1510, and game on it, it's plenty playable, and i prefer it over my crt (17in viewsonic).

a 17in lcd though i think is the way to go, and you don't need to go overboard. If it can run dvi, that's a bonus, but not 100% neccesary. Don't spend way past your budget to get the 'nicest' lcd, whatever looks good will sufice. I don't have any specific recommendations, but going to the store, find one you like, then come home and buy it for cheaper online 🙂

Hmm, maybe this is why?

If someone has a $600 lcd, what are they supposed to put?

Another vote for Viewsonic here. I absolutely love my vp171b. It's beautiful and has zero ghosting. It's the best monitor I've ever used. I paid around $400 for it but I've had it for a while and I don't know what they're going for now.
