Can a LCD monitor be used as a TV? I'm looking at the Dell 2001FP, using Svideo as input. How would it look compared to other LCD designated TVs?

No tuner cards, just coming in straight with Svideo.

just don't watch CNN for a long period of time, or anything with a fixed banner or icon on the bottom or corner of the screen, cause burn-in is hell.

Even on LCDs? I know plasmas and CRT have problems with that. I wasn't aware that LCD had that problem.

I didn't know that, but burn-in shouldn't be a problem. How would the picture look?

If LCD's burned in, wouldn't you get a picture burned in all the time from your task bar being in the same place, not moving, etc? I'm calling shens on that...

I tried to search on that, and came up with it's not that big of a problem compared to the other type of displays.

Im going off of what ive seen from a friends LCD TV he bought from compusa. He had it hooked up to his xbox and suffered from wicked burn-in problems, ended up taking it back to the store for warranty service, but in the end had to replace it.
I've been reading up on them the past half hour and it seems all im finding online is that they don't suffer from burn in at all. So id like to know also.

I read some dell threads on some of their laptops were suffering from burn in. So I guess it's possible, depending on the quality of the screen.

LCD's do NOT have refresh rate. LCD's in fact save energy when the screen does not change rapidly.

Anyone who tells you LCD's have burn in are flat out wrong.

^^ About the refresh rate, its emulated for games and movies, otherwise it does not have a fixed one, it has a maximum number of frames it can refresh however, but it can go down to one.

LCD's are a painted picture. It Paints your desktop and keeps it there, when you move your cursor, it then only changes the pixels it needs to. the rest of the screen does not get changed.

Drive it with the S-vid from a vcr or from your A/V Reciever.
It will look fine

I want to believe you, and I'm not saying you're wrong - but for everyone who says this, someone else will just as adamantly claim that LCDs DO suffer from burnin, and badly at that :\ It's like asking if ATI or Nvidia is better, can't get any semblance of a consensus on it. My 17" CRT is looking smaller & smaller (remember when we all had 14s & 15s, and only the lucky few had 17s? :p) and I think I'll soon be upgrading. I've tried to consider LCDs as an option but no two people say the same thing about them.

That's good to hear. A 20" LCD TV runs atleast 200 more than what a dell 2001FP would cost. I got to get rid of this big ass 19" TV in the bedroom.

It will over time, i plugged my dads dell lcd into a linux box and I could see where misc non moving windows stuff was burnt slightly. It will happen, but remember its not like your going to need to move your taskbar, it will look the same
