LCD Monitor TVs

Friend wants to get one of these. He saw a 27" for $700. I got my 2405 FPW for $720, so I don't know.

2405FPW sucks IMO, and it's definitely a POS when you compare to high end 19" or 20" monitors. So I don't know how much this 27" thing would suck.

So my friend wants those LCD TV Monitors, and are those any good? So they toggle between regular resolution and computer resolution? Or is it not really as high resolution as regular LCd monitors. I don't see how they can be so cheap when Dell's 3007 runs for $2000.

Edit, it's not so much for a TV as it is a computer. The guy is giving me a $2000 check to build him a Conroe system (excluding monitor). I spent $1700 on my super 3700+ rig last year with a monitor, so I think I'll be going pretty crazy with this $2000. Would you ruin your SLI system with a POS monitor like that? If I were in his shoes, I would be getting the Dell 2407FPW at least.....

It's probably ~720p if I had to guess. Good for (HD)TV, possibly not so great for computer/desktop use (especially if you're already used to a higher resolution).

Or you can do what Synth and I do and use an HDTV tuner on a computer monitor

 HDTV. I am looking to trade down to a bit cheaper tuner though since I have no more need for QAM...

Yeah, I havn't gotten cable HD to work on this card. I'll try one more time when Time Warner sends us an HD box, but if it doesn't work, I'll probably be downgrading too.

I'm just wondering how the quality is for computer display. If it's 720p, that is just suckage, especially on a 24"+. Great for TV I'm sure, but wtf is that for computer usage....

The box won't really have any effect on it; either your cableco sends some digital/HD channels unencrypted or they don't. You can't really have the cable box decrypt it and then pass it along to the card (you might be able to hook up the box with firewire though).

Time Warner in San Antonio does at least have the locals unencrypted in HD, but I'm going back to my university in a few weeks...and they just dropped the old cable company for some ghetto one no one's ever heard of before (and that doesn't do HD). I had gotten all the locals up there on cable before, only half of which are available OTA. So given that I'm now going to have to solely rely on OTA anyway, I figure I might as well sell my tuner and get something a bit cheaper. Thinking about the ATI Theater 650 whenever they decide to release it...

My local TWC office recently redid their entire HD system (they sent a notice a few weeks ago). I'm hoping they forgot to encrypt those signals :p

Well, when you do QAM digital cable scans, you have to remember...usually there's tons of (sub)channels, most of which will probably be encrypted (and thus show just a black screen)...you'll have to flip through a lot of channels to find the unencrypted ones. Usually they should have at least a retransmission of the local OTA channels, but sometimes you get lucky and get more than that. ;)
