LCD monitor suddenly died

One of my family members was using his 17" LCD, and he said that it started to smell bad/it had a burning smell, and then the monitor turned off on him.
When he tried to turn it on later, it would only turn on for 1 or 2 seconds, and the screen would disappear, but the "power" light would still be lit.

Now, the monitor works for only the first 1-2 seconds after I push the power button, and then the screen goes blank (no backlight, no display), but the power light still stays lit.

But the display shows a perfectly fine image, along with the backlight, but it all disappears after the first 1-2 seconds.
I've tried using another computer, but the monitor does exactly the same thing, so it's most likely not the computer's problem.

Is there any hope for the monitor?
It's about 2-3 years old, but it has worked really well for these past few years.

It's a Sony 17" TFT LCD, Model: SDM-HS73

Thanks 🙂

Standard warranty for LCDs = 3 years. Check with Sony if it's still under warranty and replace. Otherwise, skip step 1 and replace. Can get a 17" for ~$150 now.
