LCD monitor resolution question

I was wondering it was possible to run a notebook 1600x1200 LCD at 800x600 without much degradation or blurring? I was just curious since text looks awfully small at that high resolution, and 800x600 is exactly 1/2 as high and wide as 1600x1200. I am looking at an older IBM notebook with a 1600x1200 screen on eBay. Thanks.

actually its 1/4 the size.

I tried this on my 21.3" 1600 x 1200 LCD at work - it looks OK, but overall things were a bit "blockier" than I thought they should be. You are effectivly making the pixels 4 times larger, so everything is propertional, but a little blocky.
