ok so my widescreen laptop supports upto 1280x800 and most lcd support, recommend, 1440x900, is this going to cause a problem on laptop.

No and Yes depending how critical you are with the display. When you configure LCD to display out of its native resolution the picture seems to be blurred and not quite as distinctive as when display at native resolution. But if you are asking if it's going to work yes it will except it won't look as good. Although it'll be very hard to tell unless you reference another lcd.
By in large...you should run your laptop display at the max resolution it was designed for..often refered to as "Native Resolution". In most circumstances this setting will give you the best viewing results under most conditions.
