Hey all,
So I run a dual-monitor setup on my home PC. Both are LCD's, but one of them is much older than the other and I'm noticing some issues with the older of the two. The monitor in question is a Samsung SyncMaster 245bw (24") LCD and I've had it for about 6-7 years.
So I first noticed about 6 months ago that there seemed to be some temporary "burn-in" toward the top of the screen. I usually use this monitor for web browsing (and my primary, newer monitor for full screen gaming). So after a couple of hours of being on, if I closed Google Chrome for example, I'd see the "outline" of all the tabs and the window subtly burned into the desktop background. This is temporary and is always gone after a shutdown or period of time. I also noticed that it took about 10-15 seconds to reach maximum brightness from being off when it usually was nearly instantaneous. I figured both were age-related and dismissed it.
Now, about 2 weeks ago, I noticed after turning on my computer from cold shut down that the older monitor display wasn't turning on (both monitors would be in sleep mode). It was waking from shutdown properly (because the power light was steady and not flashing) but no display. A successful workaround thus far has been to flip the power switch in the back off then on (not the power button) or unplug the power cord and plug it back in. This restores the display and I carry on as usual.
Haven't updated drivers or anything but then again, who actually updates monitor drivers? GPU drivers are up to date and am using NVIDIA GeForce 660 GTX. To re-iterate, no issues on the newer/primary monitor -- only the old one.
Are these issues a sign that the monitor is dying and that I should start looking for a replacement? Or, should I not worry much and it's just "old-age" quirkiness to deal with?
Thanks!
