I am finally going to take the plunge and purchase an LCD monitor. After researching for some time now, I've narrowed my choices down to either the Viewsonic VP191b or the Viewsonic VX294. Nearly all of the reviews I've found have praised the VP191b for it's ability to do a lot of things well. However, the VX924, while not as highly praised, usually gets good marks for gaming performance. Since it's considerably cheaper, the VX924 is the front runner in my mind right now. Still, I am constantly reminded that the VP191b gets praise accross the board. My main concern is gaming and general use, so video isn't much of an issue.

So, between these two monitors, what would YOU suggest? If you have first-hand experience with either of these monitors your feedback is greatly appreciated. Also, if you have any other suggestions for a gaming monitor, let me know! Thanks for your input!

I believe both of these monitors use the "overdrive" technology (if I'm keeping my model numbers straight), but one uses a MVA panel (VP191B) and the other uses a TN panel (VX924). Using "overdrive" with a MVA or a PVA panel makes sense to me, since these panels tend to have slow response times, especially when you measure something other than just black to white transistions. This response time issue is the main stumbling block for MVA panels as gaming monitors. Otherwise, they have very nice characteristics, such as true 8-bit color, very high contrast, and good viewing angles.

The TN panels have always tended to have faster response times than MVA/PVA panels. Their weaknesses are in the areas of narrow viewing angles and only displaying 6-bit color. Adding overdrive to a TN panel just doesn't make sense, because it does nothing for the panels weaknesses and boosts an area that was already one of the panels strengths (the other strength being low cost).

Although I don't have first hand experience with these monitors, I would choose the VP191B over the VX924, since it would be the better all around monitor. The VX924 seems like it is an extreme extension of the marketing department's appraoch to sell monitors based solely on hyping response times. The VP191B seems like an effort by the engineering department enhance a current LCD panel.

Just to get the ball rolling. ;)
