lcd monitor contrast ratio

hey guys, was looking at lcd monitors, and there was this spec called contrast ratio. What is that ? Is it that the higher the contrast ratio, the better ?
 
contrast ratio is the ratio between the brightest white and the darkest black the panel can produce. The higher the better even though it is usually lower than the spec.
 
Beware of specs especially LCD contrast ratios. According to a recent tests by PC magazine (or PC World) the manufacturer's take great liberties with the vaugeness of the spec. Many (not all) just out right lie. Some however are very conservative and actually under estimate the ratios. If this isn't confusing enough the conclusion was the ratios don't mean dick when it came to percieved display quality. Best bet- Burn yourself a copy of Nokia Screen tester and head on down to you local store to have a look see.
