lcd moniter isnt displaying all the time

Hi

i have a hyundai imagequest 17" lcd and it randomly decides to stop displaying. when i turn the moniter off and then on again, it flashes the screen for a second and then stops displaying again. rite now it wont work properly at all, usually if i shut the computer down and then restart all over again the moniter decides to cooperate.....

i have the lcd on an old athlon 700mhz system.....could it be the old comp not playing nice with the new lcd?

any help appreciated

maybe the refresh rate is set beyound what it cna handle?
