LCD makes low humming sound. Normal?

I noticed that my 17" Etronix (rebranded Chi Mei LCD) makes a really quiet hum. It's barely detectable: I only notice when the environment is very very quiet, like when I first turn on my computer and monitor when I wake up. I then noticed that my 17" Liquidvideo (another rebranded Chi Mei) also makes a very quiet humming sound.

So now I'm thinking that maybe this is normal and that there's nothing wrong with my monitor. But OTOH, I could have sworn that these monitors didn't make any sound when I first got them. Anyone else notice that their LCD makes a very faint sound when your ear is next to it? Does the sound go away when you turn the monitor off?

I'll take a shot...
Probably the transformer is humming......

Don't know that model, but I would think its in the base..

If you put something under it, piece of felt, mousepad, or something to absorb the vibrations,
it may quiet it down a bit....

Either that or a background noise CD....LOL

Good Luck

I guess it's not quite "annoying" as much as me wondering, is this humming sound normal? If I should be concerned, then I guess I'll RMA my LCD. But if everyone's hums and still works normally, then I guess I shouldn't bother 🙂

For what its worth..
I just went over to my wife's computer with a 15 inch LCD and I couldn't hear any hum.
Its about a year old. To be truthful, my ears are not that great.

General rule is..if you are not happy, then RMA it. But then
you run the risk of getting a new one that has bad pixels.
It ain't easy.

If would be great if others commented about having a hum in their LCDs.

Hey..Good Luck.....

Thanks for the update. I just made a poll; hopefully that'll encourage more feedback. Since both my LCD's hum, I'm thinking it really shoudn't be a cause for concern. It's not really that annoying or anything. I guess I'm just making sure that humming doesn't mean they're going to fail soon or anything weird like that.

I have 2 samsungs, and no hum. No LCD i have ever used hummed. Does your panel have speakers? if it does, you might have to ground them - maybe with a spare cd player or something.

Yea, both do have speakers. I guess I could try grounding them, maybe later today when I manage to find a 3.5mm cable. This seems pretty interesting, it really does.

on bf, i bought the proview lcd from staples and the kds lcd from office depot. they looked like they were identical monitors with a few minor differences in appearance. they had the same manual, same menus, same specs. what i noticed after a few days was that the proview started to made a humming noise when turned on and it went away when i turned it off. the kds didnt have this problem. i exchanged the proview and no more humming. i think maybe u should rma it.

Yea, it's one of those consistent humming sounds when the LCD is on, not a warm-up whistling noise. I found out a few things:
Grounding the LCD to a cd player, whether plugged into power or not, didn't change the hum at all.
Neither did setting the LCD's speaker volume higher/lower or muting/unmuting the LCD speaker, which I'm not using anyway.

Stumped! 😕
