LCD life and reliability

Hi guys,

I just got a Viewsonic LCD to replace my old Viewsonic CRT. I've had the CRT for almost 8 years now. I pretty much left it on all the time (I just let it power down after I shut down). There may have been a few weeks when I've been out of town when I turned it off, but basically on all the time, and probably operating 18+ hours a day.

Should I treat my LCD more delicately (e.g., turn it off at night, when I'm going to be gone more than 2 hours)?

LCDs have a significantly longer lifetime than a CRT.

They are both around 50 000 hours running time. The Philips CRT I was looking at has an MTBF of 75 000 hours.

But CRT tend to degrade sharpness over that time. LCD will stay sharp. If you can replace the backlight it will probably last even longer.

50 000 hours at 18 hours a day is about 8 years.

Looking at it another way, turning a CRT on and off kind of zaps it, where a LCD is pretty much instantly on without any big surges etc., so I would follow the manufacturers suggestions, but likely power it off at night depending on exactly how low power the sleep mode was.

It's called "degaussing" on CRT's.
