when I turn my laptop on after a few seconds the screen flickers then goes black.

if i put the monitor under a light i can barely see the words on the screen.

Do you think I need to replace the backlight, power inverter or entire lcd montior?

do i need to buy a new lcd monitor for my laptop? or is there a less inexpensive way to fix it?

i'm wanted to use this laptop for about a year more then sell it.

sounds like the inverter to me, that would be the cheapest part to replace here. But it could be the panel going out. Very hard to troubleshoot this without testing parts. The panel will be expensive, well depending on the make and model. I worked for Sony VIAO and some of the panels were very expensive. Depending on how old the laptop is, it might not even be worth it to you if you're going to have to replace the panel. You could try the inverter, but if that's not the problem you'll be out a few bucks. Not sure what they go for, but it shouldn't be more than $30'ish.
