i was lucky enough to purchase a 18.1 planar lcd a few days but i can't adjust the refresh rates. Going from a 21" crt at 100 hertz to a 60 hertz refresh rate is serioulsy fvcking with my eyes. I searched the planar site for drivers and couldn't find jack, i d/l a program from them to figure out what drivers i need and found my monitor not supported. Could somebody please point me in the direction for drivers that will be supported by this monitor PT1814NUV

lcd monitors do NOT flicker like CRT monitors.

CRT monitors use an electron beam that scans the inside of the picture tube. On the inside face of the tube, red, green and blue phosphor dots emit light when struck by the electron beam. Once lit, the luminance of the phosphor starts to degrade until the beam comes back around to refresh it. This is known as the refresh rate.

lcd monitors use a matrix of cells 1024 x 768 for a 15?, 1280 x 1024 for an 17, 18 and most 19?. lcd monitors use a back light to create the luminance and is always on. Each cell has three transistors that let current flow through liquid crystal. One for red, one for blue and one for green. When the transistor is on, it allows light to pass. Think of it as a light valve. Colors are produced on lcd monitors using polarized filters. When the transistor turns on, it stays on, for the full cycle or refresh time, thus the amount of light output stays constant. No flicker no matter what the refresh rates.

from what ive read, the reason why your eyes get fvcked using a CRT at a low refresh rate like 60hz is because it flickers.. higher the refresh rate, less flicker.. but lcds, on the other hand, do not flicker at all (even at 60hz) so it really shouldnt be affecting your eyes at all.. at least in the same way as a CRT would at 60hz.

maybe it's the fact i've never used a lcd, i've always stuck with high quality crt's at high refresh rates (85hertz+). I really have no complaints with the lcd it's just something i guess i'll have to get used to and i have all my deskspace back!!

He's exactly right...

The main benefits of LCDs are Less Eye Strain, And space...

You should have any eye strain at all now...

Help Me Save My Eyes!!!

I just bought a NEC 17 LCD. It is gazillions of times better than my 19 Flat tube CRT. NEC recommends that the vid card refresh be set to 60 Htz. With a CRT, I cannot stand to look ar 60, but like the others have said there is no flicker with LCDs.

Is it bad for an LCD to run higher than 60Hz? I am running at 75Hz currently. Will it extend the life to run at 60Hz?
