Dad wants a 32" LCD HDTV for the living room this Christmas. I decided to read up on Consumer Reports and they say that Sony Bravia is the best followed by the Sharp Aquos

Cheapest I have found it is on Newegg.com and Samsclub

1199.99 + 28.20 + no tax for newegg.com

1289 + sales tax for sams club

Or just go with the Sharp Aquos for 999.99 + ship on newegg.com?

since when did Westinghouse or Sceptre become "generic"? I guess thats how the "big" name brands get suckers to pay more than double for the same thing.

hey, if you don't believe me, go read the million and one threads at avsforums on Westinghouse and Sceptre. If after reading those you still want to rob your father of an extra $600, then what kind of a techy son are you?

Actually I have been reading some LCD forums and some users were stating that their Westinghouses didn't have as clear/sharp colors. I also read that some went faulty after a few months of use.

This is like people and their 2007 and 2407 monitors. They're great screens just like the 37" Westy, but when you compare it to a truly good monitor, you'll lose. A Viewsonic VP2030b of a VP930b will crush the Dell monitors ANY DAY in terms of image quality, color, contrast, everything. Just like my 46" Bravia kills your 37" Westy.

You get what you pay for.

Sony has a premium over Samsung, and Samsung is pretty much just as good, but I've seen those 37" Westys. My friend opted for one as his monitor, and sure it's great. IT's great value, but in terms of quality, I can tell my XBR2 kills it anyday. If I were to buy one for my apartment (poor college student), I would DREAM for an XBR2, but in reality I would have to buy a 37" Westy. So get real. Deals are great, but cheap does not mean good. Don't diss the good TVs out there. Bravias will rule, and no cheap LCD will beat it anytime soon.

how about a Vizio from Costco? You dad may consider it generic brand but at lease it's back by the costco return policy.

I'd second the Vizio. I just recently purchased the 42" Vizio LCD and I'm super happy with the set.

You'd be better off with a widescreen CRT if you're looking for picture quality. Go for the Westinghouse - you could buy two for the price of a Sony!

Between the two, I prefer the Sony. This was after looking at them side by side for 30 or so minutes.. I would have bought the Sony, but I don't watch TV nearly enough to justify spending $1200 on a TV when I'm in more need of a new computer (and two LCDs..!).

If you check out the AVSForums, you will see the Syntax Olevia's come highly regarded.

Of course, it sounds like you have made up your mind that anything other than Sony and Sharp are "generics"...

What's the contrast ratio on the Sony and the Sharp?

It's the law of dimenishing returns for quality.

The Bravia may well be 'a bit better' but is it 2x better then the Westy? HELL NO!

I purchased the 42" 1080p Sharp Aquos (model 42D62U) this past weekend for $1900. I realize it's not the size you're looking for but it's a gorgeous screen. I'm very pleased with it so far.

What's the contrast ratio on the Westy? I've also heard in my research at AVS forums that westy support is awful...

Westy is also the most returned LCD TVs according to many people who work in retail.
