Thinking about getting an LCD screen (Dell UltraSharp 1702FP 17" Digital 1280x1024 LCD) but i've heard in the past that they're were problems with refresh rates for gaming. is that still the case? i play FPS mostly-- Wolfenstein and Battlefield1942. any comments would be appreciated. thanks.

Most hardcore gamers avoid LCDs, especially FPS.

The refresh rates are not that great. I notice a big difference watching movies on my 19' CRT as opposed to my 18" LCD at work.

;) Yup when it comes to motion LCDs are still way behind compared to CRT, hence movies and games are not really suited to LCD, esp gaming. For gaming you are often constricted in res to the LCD'as native mode or else put up with distortions. If you do a lot of 2D work for long hours then an LCD is worth considering, if gaming and watching video is important an LCD is much better not to mention cheaper and bigger for the same money.

EDIT: Thanks tenoc, correction, "if gaming and watching video is important a CRT is much better not to mention cheaper and bigger for the same (or less) money."

I'm thinking Austin would edit out the "LCD" and insert "CRT".

Bottom line is, from what I've read, is that the only reason to have a LCD is if you want to save space and weight, well Ok they look cool too LOL:)! If you have room you are better off with a CRT. You get more viewable area for far less money and better performance especially under gaming conditions. Now don't get me wrong this isn't an expert opinion and I may be a bit biased cause I'm running a 21 inch Trinitron. That sucker takes up a lot of room and is heavy as hell but man the games look great :D!!!!!

there are pro's and cons to getting an LCD monitor over a CRT monitor, for me the pros outweigh the cons in my situation, and i actually prefer the image quality in gaming over things like refresh rates.

for me i use 1024x768 on my samsung syncmaster 570S 15 inch LCD monitor.
everything just looks soo crisp and detailed and smooth and solid on desktop and on games.
when i first got this LCD i felt like a fish out of water and couldn't focus properly on the games issue, however now i dont even notice it.

i have a 25ms response time on this monitor so it's not as bad as some LCD's out there.

In my opinion, gaming on an LCD can be just as good, if not better, than gaming on a CRT. The picture is sharper, the colors brighter, and overall a better gaming experience on the right LCD. You have to be very picky about what LCD to get however if you want to get great gaming performance out of it. The most important aspect of the LCD to watch for is the reponse time...

Check out the following thread at arstechnica for all the information that you will ever need about LCDs: Arstechica LCD Thread

This thread has been running for over a year now, has over 57 pages, and will give you an idea of what LCD's to get and which to aviod.

I would personally recommend the Dell 1900FP (rebadged Samsung 191T) if you have the cash. If you want something a little less expensive, go with the Samsung 171T. I have the 1900FP now, and I LOVE my games on it. I am currently playing NOLF2, however I have also played Return to Castle Wolfenstien, Unreal Tournament 2003, Jedi Knight 2, etc. They all look spectacluar... I would highly encourage you to read that thread (it will take a while, but it is worth your time.)

This should be sweet, and the MSRP is only $699, not bad for such a sweet monitor. I will probably consider this for my next upgrade after a few months so the price can come down. I am about to get my Radeon 9700 Pro in, and with this monitor, image quality would be awesome. I think I will wait for some reviews first though before I get too excited.

 Although that should be a big step in LCD technology, it's still going to be a while considering prices:

"$699, not bad"

15" LCD $300
19" $160-200
22" $500

;) So you could have a dual setup using a 19" CRT for gaming and movies and a 15" LCD for your close up 2D work and still come out $200+ better off! Of course I understand this monitor will have its market and it is a great leap, but give me the a large CRT any day which is esp good in all resolutions, free from dead pixels, has great contrast/brightness and best of all is CHEAP (much like me I suppose LOL)!

I've got a Sony M51D 15" LCD monitor. I'm aware that CRT's are a shade better in quality, but hey, I'm in a dorm room, I'd like to have a desk...lol that is should I ever actually decide to do my homework ;) But anyway, I play games, watch movies, all that good stuff, looks great to me.
