Hey all,

I am looking at these 2 17 inch flat screen LCD's from Samsung. They each have their benefits and faults.
I think the 173 has a 25 ms response time while the 172 has a 12 ms. I will definitely be using this monitor for games/movies, but will the 25 ms time hurt me (i'm not doing graphics work with it)?

The 173 also has an 8 -something panel while the 172 has a six, I know that means the color quality on the 173 is better, but again, is this a huge deal?

What it really comes down to is that I know the 173 has better image quality, but can it compare to the 172 in terms of ghosting, and the other way around; can the 172 compare in terms of image quality for a non graphics user?

Right now, I have a Ti 4400, and will eventually get a 6800 GT, or the x800 pro (maybe XT), when they come down in price a bit and when hl2 benchmarks are released (that's going to be my primary game for a LONG time). Do you guys have any suggestions as to which one would be better for my needs?

Oh yea, the 173 is more expensive by about 60 dollars at most of the venders I looked at.

Thanks in advance.

Btw, this is the greatest tech site w/ the nicest people on the forums. You helped me when I first built my computer in 2002, and gave me great suggestions for a new HS w/ my new Athlon 64 system. Thanks!!

Id suggest the samsung 710t instead of the 172x. Sure the 172x looks great but the 710t can produce more colors on screen simatenously and the power pack is built in so you don't have a humongous box you have to plug into the wall. It is also more flexible in tilt and pivot and costs quite a bit less as well.

You can get one off dell.com's website curretnly for 513.95. Occasionaly dell runs a sale where it gives you 10% off lcd monitors. Combine that with a x% off (can be 25,20,10) and your talking about savings that will knock it down into the 400's range. As a matter of fact, im trying to do this exact thing myself.

Thanks, yea, I've been hearing that the 710t and the 172x have either the same panel, or the 710t is better. Plus, the 710 is much cheaper, so I think I'll go with that. I will probably order from dell because I don't want to deal w/ Newegg's 8 pixel policy. If I shell out that much for a monitor, I want to know I can return it no hassle if it's got some problems.

Thanks again!
