LCD and gaming

I know LCDs use to be bad when playing FPS games because of bluring. Does this problem still exist? Does response time tell you how quickly a LCD refreshes? If so, what response time would be acceptable when playing action games? Is 25ms too slow?

thanks

Anything 25ms and under you will be fine. I have a Samsung 213t(25) and a Dell 2001FP(16) I can see no ghosting on either.

personally, i'd recommend 16ms or faster for a very good gaming lcd. 25ms, like wut twysted said, is perfectly fine if u grab the right monitor. i've gotten used to lcd's now, and i actually like them a lot and dont mind them for gaming. if ur planning on getting one, give me a price, and i'll find u a really great gaming lcd.

If you primarily game, you still want a CRT. If you don't game often, and don't mind paying 3x the price for the same size, then an LCD will be fine.

Ghosting is down to your eyes and the monitor in question.

I game everyday with my LCD both online and offline, ghosting wise it`s minor for me in fast FPS games, just bought painkiller and UT2004 retail & both play fine for me with my Samsung 191T,the main advantage to me of using LCD (especially in DVI mode) is the crispness of the image compared to CRT.

tomshardware actually rates the hydis 20ms panel better than AUO's 16ms and LG's 16ms panels. I have an acer with that hydis panel and I like it. I play Ut2004 right now (dont really like the game, but doom3 and HL2 not out yet).

I think its a personal subjective thing. I use a 172N for gaming, 25ms panel, analog connection, etc and I love it. I haven't seen a CRT yet I'd take instead. I see no ghosting at all in UT2004 (fastest game I own) and it's a crystal clear display for everything I do. I read reviews on this monitor and most reviewers said they saw ghosting, I guess I'm lucky that I don't. The only problem I have with lcd's is non-native resolutions don't work well. However, 12x10 is a good res for the games I play so it's not a big deal, yet. I do have a 6800GT on pre-order though so hopefully it won't be a problem in the future either :).

if you have the money its a good combo...but expect to pay a lot for the big 16 ms screens...and even for the 17 inch 12-16ms screens.

I'm still undecided whether I want a 16 ms 19-inch+ or a 12 ms 17-inch+

If you want an LCD screen, it will be fine for games, if you look around at the best ones.
BUT: There's no point in getting an LCD unless you have a good enough system to play at the LCD's res, especially if you get a 1600x1200.
You should have a 9800Pro or equivelant card, and a supporting system, or be happy-ish with lower frame rates as you cannot change the res down without it looking a bit funky.

An X800Pro would be ideal for a 1600x1200 LCD, as you can then pile on AA/AF as you want :)
