LCD and CRT flexibility

I finally am ready to replace my 10 year old philips trinitron and I would like an LCD but have some reservations. First, when im reading or writing or doing general email stuff, I like keeping the resolution relatively low, maybe 1024x768 to 1296x1024. However i'd like a screen that could go higher for gaming. Is there any high resolution LCD that does not look like crap when viewing text at lower resolutions? I was thinking maybe there was a 2048 x 1536 LCD , would that not look perfect at 1024 x 768?

ALso, if i were to get a CRT, which one would be good? HOw are the new model CRT"s that are about 1/4th teh size of the original (but not quite lcd size)

thanks in advance.

Well, you could always just stay at high resolution and change the font size in windows or zoom windows while doing word/excel/email stuff. If there was an LCD with 2048 x 1536 resolution, it would be way expensive, and very huge. You eyes would get tired constantly moving up and down!
