Rather then the screen size, how good/ bad to play game on 17" LCD 1024 x 768 compared to 19" LCD 1280 x 1024.

Confuse to choose either Samsung 940B or Samsung 740B, mainly for gaming.

1280x1024, IMO is far superior to 10x7 these days. Plus, the extra screen size is very helpful for other things besides gaming, you can sit further away from the monitor, reducing eye strain, etc.

17" LCD's use 1280x1024
so essentially, your comparing between a 17" version of a resolution to a 19", stretched version.

i chose 17", and i am happy
i own the samsung 730b and its a great monitor

i'd much rather an 8bit panel, but those are more expensive and not so great for gaming yet, but i think the samsung 970 is supposed to be a good performing 8bit model

in case you dont know, 8bit is more accurate color (16.7m colors) compared to 6bit (something around 260k+ colors, about 16.2 after dithering)... my panel produces some color banding, but all 6bit panels do

IMO, games are more impressive on a 19" LCD, and games at 1024 x 768 don't look too bad, especially if you use proportional scaling.

Get a 19", you won't regret it. I also find the desktop to look a bit small on a 17" 1280x1024 resolution. My 19" also looks pretty dang good in 1024x786 AND 800x600 while playing games (when I still had my 9600pro trying to play Doom 3)

If you're nearsighted like me, yeah. Otherwise 17"@1280x1024 delivers higher candelas per square meter (luminance) and a finer dot pitch than a 19"@1280x1024. The crystals on a 19" will transition ever-so-slightly faster than a 17" though (assuming same resolution), but probably within a fraction of a millisecond.

jaggies are more noticeable on a 19" running at 1280x1024 than a 17" running 1280x1024 due to the lower DPI of the 19".

frankly, though, the abilities of the panel are more important than the sheer size of the image, and if you've got a set budget you can get a better panel by going for the smaller one, generally.

if you have a videocard that can power the AA needed to produce a smooth image in games like FEAR and CoD2, then go for a 19". (such a videocard does not exist atm...) otherwise get a 17". Image looks better. Immersion..blah.. if you can't get into a game with a 17" LCD, you just can't get into a game. lol
now, if we were talking about one of those 24" widescreen beasts, that would be different. 2" inches is not going to help better immerse you into a game though.

if you don't play those kinds of games (if any gaming at all), then it wont be as big of an issue.
but im not sure what you are looking for in a monitor or what your purposes are....
just dont get confused and think the extra 2" will provide more screen realestate, as with both sizes running the native resolutions, you wont get anything on a 19" except a more stretched image compared to a 17".

Okay, it depends on what you have and what you're willing to work with. The higher the resolution, the more demanding it will be to run the game. You can use a larger monitor (1280), but if you try to use 1024 it will blur up because of stretching on it. If you use 1024, you won't be able to get any higher than that.

System constrain: Abit AV8, A64 3000 939, Leadtek 6600GT AGP (goes to 6800GS AGP if available/ higher is

not in budget), 1G Corsair value. Will 17" LCD 1024 x 768 good for for FPS gaming (Far Cry, Doom, etc)? My

Samsung 17" Flat CRT 1280 x 1024 looks too small and not acceptable to my eyes. 19" LCD 1280 x 1024 will

probably not able to max out the detail setting, even with my upgraded video card.

I would say go with the 19" LCD. You will be happier with it for a longer period of time. It sounds like you are willing to upgrade your video card to a 6800GS when available. So, if you bought the 17" now, you would be kicking yourself later after upgrading the card to a 6800GS and for not buyig the 19" LCD.

Alright, Samsung 940B was in my desk now. It is big and not quite match with my 6600GT vid card right now (run too slow at 12 x 10), but I'm sure this will suite with my next vid card upgrade and will suit to my next PC overhoule, probably on next 2 years.

Thanks.
