Driver says Caltrans worker too slow to jump to safety

An Oregon woman who struck a Mendocino County Caltrans worker with her van said the man could have jumped out of her way more quickly, the California Highway Patrol reported Wednesday.

Catherine Stotts, 62, of Eugene, was issued a citation at the scene for reckless driving causing injury, the CHP said.

Kenneth Sears of Willits sustained major injuries when hit in the construction zone on Highway 20 west of Willits Tuesday afternoon. He was taken to Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits for treatment, the CHP said.

Stotts was driving a 1992 Ford van westbound at 2:04 p.m. when her vehicle hit Sears, the CHP said.

She was driving in the closed construction lane and passing other westbound vehicles when she rounded a curve and saw Sears, who was working on foot in the closed lane, the CHP said.

Stotts braked and Sears tried to jump over a guardrail but the van struck both the railing and Sears, the CHP said.

Stotts told officers she was driving in the construction lane because she was not used to driving on new asphalt and that she thought Sears could have jumped faster, the CHP said.

Sure, drive on lane closed due to construction, hit a worker whom expect to be safe on a closed lane, then say he should have jumped.

She should be banned from driving for life.

I do think the elimination of mandatory physical education is a big factor in the child obesity problem.

My ass.

Parents need to take some responsibility; stop feeding their kids crap and allowing them to sit in front of the TV/XBOX/computer all day and night.

Guess she was too busy looking at the "closed lane" signs and not watching the road or the cal trans guys working on it.

At my school PE was still mandatory and I graduated high school in 2002.

What the hell? That's all they charged her with? No reckless endagerment? She was driving in a CLOSED lane. Article says the dude sustained major injuries, not a scuff or broken arm.

Was mandatory for me as well, I graduated 03.

Of course, I completely detest the outdoors, sunlight, and everything requiring interaction with others in a sports setting, so I think that the desired effect was lost on me. It simply increased (greatly!) the number of activities I can say that I've tried and hated.

Sure, I am not saying parents should just blame the school. I am saying physical ed twice a week really helps. You are basically guaranteeing at the very minimum some burnt calories.

Was this guy an actual CalTrans employee, or just a contractor's employee.

Usually, the dumbfucks in the media lump everyone who works on a CalTrans project into the same "CalTrans worker" category...even though most of them actually work for contractors.

If the guy was an actual CalTrans employee...trying to jump over the guardrail was probably the most work he'd done all year...and he failed because it wasn't in his job description. :p

While I graduated quite awhile ago, we had 4 years of PE required(only 3 of english though). :Q

After seeing people on TV jump out of the way of bullets, why can't they jump out of the way of a car?

why does it matter? he expects some reasonable safety in a closed lane, but there was a dumbass driving in that closed lane. her reason for driving in said closed lane is not valid.

i wish she got charged with something more severe.

it should be against the law to be stupid. the punishment should be death.
