I wonder if it's actually possible to get laid off from Microsoft.

They can't exactly proclaim that they don't have the funds to keep you.

 
They wouldn't source budget as the problem; but I'm sure they downsize to remove inefficiencies and halt work on dead-end projects all the time.

true enough. Although they could always transfer said employees from dead-end projects to other ones
