My uncle is one of these 5,000 layoffs and the plant closing.

P&Ners swear it's not happening, totally mine and my uncle's imagination.

12-8-2008 Dow Chemical to slash 5,000 jobs, shut 20 plants

Dow Chemical Co. said Monday it will slash 5,000 full-time jobs ? about 11 percent of its total work force ? close 20 plants and sell several businesses to rein in costs amid the economic recession.

The company, one of the largest chemical makers in the world, expects the plan to save about $700 million per year by 2010. Dow also will temporarily idle 180 plants and prune 6,000 contractors from its payroll.

Dow's actions follow those of rival DuPont, who last week said it would cut 2,500 jobs and warned it won't turn a profit in the fourth quarter due to a slowdown in the automotive and construction markets.

Like Dow, Wilmington, Del.-based DuPont is releasing 4,000 contractors, halting discretionary spending, slowing or stopping noncritical projects, and temporarily idling more than 100 manufacturing units. The yearlong restructuring plan will affect about 4,200 employees, or roughly 7 percent of DuPont's work force.

Dumbass, nobody has denied that people are being laid off. You're the dumbass that has stated the DOW Chemical has closed up shop in the US and relocated their entire business to Thailand. And you're also a dumbass for not believing that companies are still hiring.

They didn't really win, but they do get the money that they are owed.
Glad they did.

Wouldn't the creditors be the first in line to get money back when a company has to liquidate its assets?

A lot of these companies are not filing bankruptcy.

What they are doing is folding up here and moving to places like Thailand.

How come no one pays any attention in here?

Name one company that completely folded up and moved to thailand. I'll not be expecting an answer.

DOW Chemical
McOwned again.

Pittsburg workers spared in Dow Chemical job cuts

Many have not been "spared". They have closed plants all over the country and thousands of Americans have lost their jobs.

Why do you hate America and fellow Americans?

You should leave since you hate them and it so much.
That your best comeback after being McOwned again?

I'm gainfully employed full time by a great company, probably paying more in taxes than you even earn. You're a loser ex-con who can't even hold onto a job, a wife, an investment, a business deal...looking for handouts on internet forums. I'm the backbone of America, you're the stench in the armpit. I'm a future asset of America, you're the future (and present) liability. You call yourself the most educated person on the internet, when you don't even have a college degree and I'd wager you're borderline retarded on an IQ test. So I'm not going anywhere, but I could provide 100's of reasons why you should GTFO. Shall we continue?

Government numbers are skewed and posting this list here really gives us a good insight of where the layoffs are located and what kind of jobs they are. Just from looking at this simple list we can see that the bulk of the layoffs are located in the Midwest. We can also see a trend of the tech sector laying off many high paying jobs in California.

Don't forget the invisible layoffs that we don't see -- that is to say -- the often conveniently ignored and forgotten (conservatively estimated) 150,000 new jobs that the nation needs every month to keep pace with explosive population growth. Since those needed new jobs don't come into existence, you might call it a constructive or invisible layoff.

Wyndham Worldwide is cutting 4,000 due to a 40% reduction in planned timeshare sales. This is directly related to the frozen capital markets and the company's inability to finance the receivables.

Man, bad news from all directions, but I feel like this stuff gets magnified like an echo chamber because we're all seeing the same news from all over. People who can still afford to spend get spooked, reign in spending, and things get even worse. It's a cycle...

Not all the lay-offs are exactly current, but since February here locally, Sea-Ray Boats has laid off approx. 800 workers or over 80 percent of the employees. The latest being 60 last month.

Principal Financial is laying off 550 (if I remember correctly) worldwide including 300 here in Des Moines. Des Moines is basically built on the insurance industry so I'm not sure how we'll fare.

Bullshit. I highly doubt you have anybody. They haven't even come out with the list of people cut yet, I know it because I have many friends there, I worked there for 3 years and know the CFO, Treasurer, and worked right next to the CEO/CFO of timeshare.
