I chipped a tiny corner of my cpu when I took the heatsink off. To my suprise it still works. Is it safe to assume I won't run into any problems in the near future because of it.
Is there a layer of protection over the actual transisors or did I just kill a few million.

If this one dies because of this situation I'll be 0-2 with cpu's. This will be the second one I chipped and destroyed. P!ssing me off! :frown:

Good thing they were only cheap Duron's! :D

If I ever chip something like a $500 Barton this computer's going out the window!

It really depends how much of the corner you really chipped off. Sounds like you got lucky when you chipped the corner, if you had damaged the core then more than likely the machine wouldn't have even booted. Since it did boot and it doesn't sound like you're having any problems I wouldn't worry about it. I have a couple of chipped processors too that I've never had a problem with. Other people though have killed their processors with just a small chipped corner. It all just depends on how lucky you are sometimes.

So it's safe to assume that there is a very small protective layer right?
