Do employers have the unrestricted right to place employees who have been hurt on the job on layoff status?

Employee got hurt October 1. Is on injury leave till Nov 5. Status turns to layoff. Layoff status till March 8th. Misses holiday pay because of layoff status.

Does this hold weight that employers have the right to put employee on layoff status?

It depends on the state laws. Some states allow employers to fire people for any reason (except the obvious like race, gender, religion etc).

well the employer switched the employee from leave to lay off status until March when he returned to work. Since the employee was on lay off status he was unable to collect holiday pay.

Uh, from 1st hand experience, IF someone is out on sick or injury leave and has been granted such leave already. They can not be terminated or reclassed as laid-off(same thing as terminated) Untill the effective date of their return has been reached.
