How much of a hassle do they give you at airports?

my g/f has a plate and screws in her foot and was on crutches at the airport
they made her hop through the metal detector without crutches and it of course went off... they then used the hand held metal detector all over her and such to see that it was her foot. She also had a walking boot on, she still couldn't use it to walk for 2 weeks, and they made her take that off as well. Hopping and removal of boot wasn't exactly easy and in fact was painful for her.

My gf's bro has a rod in his leg (broke it skiing a few years ago). Screener wanded him, etc., and asked if he had anything else in his pockets or in his pants. Gf's bro said "No, but I don have a metal rod in my leg." The screener replied, "Hmmm... can you take it out?"

What do you expect? Security of any kind is a joke and only a dream.....It is politics! The idiot American Public expects government to protect them. It cannot!

As a side note....One of the reasons the US defeated the USSR in the Cold War was the policy of allowing individuals to think and adapt to current circumstances and ignoring rules that were counterproductive.

Today, and with our sue happy courts, we are told that the rules are unbending and must be applied no matter the situation.

Arm the Pilots! They are already 70+% exmilitary and would need only a minimum of training. Federal Marshals on every flight would bankrupt the industry!

Common sense is what is needed but I doubt that's what we'll get!:|

Security can in fact be real and effective (though not foolproof).

El Al does well.

Here in America, we have lots of people that used to be belittled and mocked who suddenly find themselves in a position of power. Small minded people in position of authority like to say "no" because it's the only power they can exercise.

Security at American airports is still a joke, it's just that now, it's a much more inconvenient joke for passengers.

that banned item that a 84 year old is carrying could really be passed to someone else.. witha lil more danger..

really tho, im amazed that they dont check necklaces... i could easily hide some sharp metal cord under the beads on my necklace... it never sets the detector off

friggin insane.

My dads friend had his money clip with a small knife that flips out of it that he had for a long time. they confiscated it, obviously and understandibly, but why dont they let you ship it in the cargo? for example, why dont they have little boxes you can buy, put stuff in, like pocket knives, and then put it in the cargo and pick it up at your destination? the airlines will make money, and people wouldnt have to loose stuff that is important to them.

Bleh. My fiancee's sister had a pocket knife that she tossed into a camera bag and she went through the airport security TWICE (flying in and out) plus going through Disney World security and NO ONE FOUND ANYTHING!!! Yeah, great job, and she didn't even know it was there, she found it when she was taking out the camera

I have a stainless steel hip, and a steel AICD (Pacemaker type device, but larger) implanted in my chest.
It can get quite amusing and/or frustrating.

It was interesting explaining all this to the native Hawaiian screener at the local airport on Kauai.
