Here's the bottom line, or maybe the punch line:

In Houston, it is now harder for a lawyer to be elected mayor than a lesbian.

In the last two weeks of the hard-fought campaign, several mailings — one of them funded to the tune of $40,000 by candidate Gene Locke's finance chairman and another finance committee member — urged voters to choose Locke because Annise Parker is a lesbian.

Parker hit back with two tough mailings attacking Locke for his history as a lawyer and a lobbyist.

So please enlighten us as to what exactly the problem is.....

Houston is far from Redneck country. Hell, it's mostly transplanted notherners, which explains why they have had a liberal mayor for the last twenty years.
No northern rednecks? I've seen quite a few toothless wonders in wife-beaters in kentucky, indiana and ohio.

A flier put out by David Wilson, another opponent of gay rights, shows Ms. Parker with her longtime partner by her side, with the headline: “Is this the image Houston wants to portray?”

*shakes magic 8-ball*: It is decidedly so.

Sorry, back in line with the other bigots you go.

the guy probably doesn't even live in houston.

I think I discovered his motive though. When googling him to see if he lived in Houston I found a few false positives, among them David Wilson, gay Canadian figure skater/choreographer, and David Wilson, a gay named plaintiff in the Massachusetts SC case that established same sex marriage in the state. Clearly, he's just going to opposite extremes so he isn't confused with his name doppelgangers.
