Laws agaisnt online harrassment?

I got this guy who consistently harrasses me on the internet. He's a US citizen and he i know his ip. I was wondering if their is any laws against this in the US or if ISP's put something in their terms of service stating that excessive harassment isn't allowed?

Can't quite be illegal, considering nothing was done about the family that harassed the 13 year old girl and drove her to commit suicide.

There are no laws currently. Some states have tried to enact laws but it gets tricky regarding free speech/1st amendment.

if its on facebook or myspace now, you can report it and they will investigate and possibly close to account i believe. but if it son like aim or something just block him and/or harass him back. if he lives in another state they won't charge him with anything but if he lives on the other side of town you might be able to file harassment charges.

I think it can be considered verbal harassment. However, unless they're threatening you or something I really don't think they would do much. Also, like others have said if it's on Facebook or MySpace just contact the admins and they'll probably have that account closed, or you could just block them.

Best bet is try to find as much information as possible and see if you can find another way to get him in trouble.

For example I had this 17 year old kid harrassing me online and hacking my game server (using exploits in the game, threatning to DDoS, performing DDoS on vent etc). Legally not much I could of done.

But he posted his pic on a forum of him drinking alcohol out of a funnel at a party hosted at his house (which he stated in the post). I emailed the picture to his local cops just to identify him then reported his harassing actions to see if there is anything they can do. The picture alone probably drew their interest considering he was hosting a party at his house and drinking under age and possibly providing drinks to other people. I never heard back on if they investigated this or not, but he has not bothered me since.
