How much is a bagger for it?

Why? I have twice the land you do covered in oaks and I get along fine. My neighbor has some huge silly bagger and it looks like more of a hassle than just bagging the leaves up. Once you get your technique down you can fly through bags. Leaves only fall once a year.

How often do you guys change blades or sharpen them? I might accidentally mow over the occasional stick I don't see, but my blades are always badly chipped or dented inward making sharpening them kinda pointless, I tried but never seemed as good cut as a new blade so I've been getting one about once every couple of years.

I have half acre, if I do it once a week, john deer guy said about once a season...100% flat surface, and probably a few twigs will get eaten.

To replace or sharpen? I know your supposed to sharpen them regularly but mine always get in terrible shape. Sharpening it makes the blade edge look like a curvy mountain road.

No I have a sharpening kit, probably cheaper to buy new blades than pay someone else to sharpen them

Generally once a season, usually with an bench grinder. Blades on the snapper seem to last for years.

I broke down and bought a Husky riding mower this year. Looked at JD but just couldn't justify the X series for my uses. Yard isn't that big at a touch under an acre but really looking forward to getting a bagger for leaves in the fall and a sweeper for all the nuts. Yard is covered in trees and it usually takes two weekends to get the leaves up.

Any reason you didn't go with used X JD? What husky'd you buy?

A couple reasons but mainly there isn't a whole lot around here. I live in a fairly depressed area and high end riding mowers aren't exactly common place. Second I'm a little sketchy on spending north of $2k on a used mower.

I bought the YTH22V46. I really liked the twin cylinder motor. With regular maintenance and a little luck I look to get close to a decade out of it. It has pretty good HP for the money so it should do well with yard chores. Like I said, it's not going to get worked hard. Mowing grass and leaves mainly. I felt like a I got a lot of mower for the money spent. Got the mower and a cart for $1440. (friend works at Lowes hooked me up on a discount)

Become friends with someone who works there. I work with a guy who's wife works at one and it's nice knowing I could use that 20% discount if I wanted. It's not much for cheaper items but if you spend hundreds it really helps.

Eh, so I'm thinking about selling my old gas mower to get one of the newer manual mowers.

Had a thread in OT about that...

But uh, how much could I expect to get for the gas mower? It works fine, though probably over 5 years old. It's a drive-mower also.

$250?

Whats a manual mower? Like those old reel mower's? I always wondered how well those actually work.

what do you guys think about buying a used riding lawnmower? Worth it or better buy a brand new one?

I am thinking of getting an 06-08 JD X300 or X320 for about 1200-1600 ... depending what I can find and the hours, should be better then buying a brand new JD D series for 1500~.

They work OK, but several issues. One, you need to maintain a certain speed to effectively cut, this can be a problem on hills/thick grass. Two, sometimes you run into problems getting the wheels to grip meaning you just slide over the grass. Lastly, don't work so well with all types of things you'll cut in the yard. Work best on smaller plots with that nice leafy green grass ( I don't know my grasses, whatever most sod tends to be).

I bought mine used and had it about 5 years now.

make sure its not to old and see what enigne it has. If its Honda or B&S most of those are ok. If its one of the other 2 then double check them. And like a used car its all about upkeep after the first couple years.
