Lawmakers Propose legislation for reconcilation for slavery

A group of black Virginia lawmakers announced legislation today calling for a state apology for slavery. The joint resolution urges that the General Assembly ``hereby atones for the involuntary servitude of Africans'' and commits to reconciliation. The group said today it will formally introduce the resolution on the first day of the session, January tenth. Richmond Senator Henry Marsh is a sponsor of the resolution. He says with the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown this year, it's the right time to set an example for the nation.

Historians say Virginia has a rich slavery history, with Richmond being a central point for the purchase of Africans.

Marsh says it's time ``for Virginia to take a step toward reconciliation.''

The lawmakers say a resolution calling for a similar apology to American Indians is in the works.

What does everyone think about this??

It is stupid. No one alive has ever been in slavery. The nation has already apologized enough. Plus, a state apology could open the door to potential lawsuits. IE - reparations via the court system. Its been over 100yrs, and many in the U.S. don't even have distant ancestors that ever owned slaves.

Women were also persecuted and enslaved. It took some time before we were treated as citizens and allowed to vote.

I want a written apology, and some money would be nice too.. .... WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Is anyone even alive who had a black slave? I think it's stupid and it's ridiculous to ask for an apology at this point.

completely agree. i'm tired of hearing this garbage.

I think this completely stupid and inane. Next up, Jews recieve billions in lost slave wages from Egypt.

I think what they need to do is get together and figure out what they can do for the African Amercian community in the future instead of wasting their time with something that happened 100 years ago.

No fvcking way!!! :|

This is nothing more than a handout and a complete waste of taxpayer's money. Tell you what, you show me some living slaves and we can pay them. Otherwise, you get nothing.

Yeah, we're going to pay people for being black now... This country is doomed.

I'd like to think we actually get something in return for that...

Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country. ---John F. Kennedy

These people need to pay attention to that statement.

IMO, initially, did get alot in return. Now it is a possible crutch.
