Lawmaker asks SEC to consider halting short selling

It somehow seems wrong to "bet" and hope that a stock will fall.

Its wrong to let people 'buy' a stock that trades at a p/e of over 15, much less 154!

*cough* ebay *cough*

Another idiot lawmaker trying to make a name for himself.

<< I never like the concept of short selling. >>

Short selling is an important component of the market as it acts as a counter balance to "irrational exuberance". Without it, the market volatility would be much worse then it already is.

I don't think it would help that much. You'd still have the futures markets, which serve a pretty important function, so you can't just shut them down, and you can speculate just as well there. Requiring more of a paper trail might help, but I don't know if that's possible.
