It has been observed my intelligent observers that lots of people don't give a sh!t about anything or anyone except themselves and their own interests, particularly financial. Even more cleaver people noted that because of this fact, lots of people get hurt. Now the really bright people, looking at these two facts, realized that one could be made to mitigate the other. They wrote laws, making it possible for those who might be harmed by the first principle to reduce that likelihood by making it definitely not in someone?s interest to act that way. Thus were born punitive damages and everybody lived happily thereafter, or so we thought.
Well as with all good things, those who think only of themselves and don't give a sh!t about anyone else, while the stood in terror of having their asses sued off, never gave up their interest only in themselves. They began to wonder how they could strike back at these perspicacious souls that devised such cunning laws. They set to work, spending liberally of their treasure, hopping to save even more of it down the road, to demean, smear, ridicule, and insult such people as thieves, barbarians and self interested buffoons, exactly like themselves.
And they had some luck because as in everything there are always those in any field. They started a whole movement of hate ranters and putdown artists to jack up the public, to suborn their very own natural interest to turn against these saints who had their best interests at hart and would have protected their interests in court if a time came when they were needed. They are call conservatives, these smear artists, and because people are so filled with hate and can't wait for a chance to express it, they have convinced, brainwashed, a significant portion of the public into voting for people who do not have their real interests at heart and are under the pay of those who care only about themselves and don't give a sh!t about anyone else.
Well this works very successfully because most of the time nobody needs that kind of protection. Life is pretty good. There is still fear of screwing up and hurting your own pocket book in the process. But occasionally somebody's car blows up because of a fuel tank problem that would have cost too much to fix and paying the lawsuit was figured to be cheaper, and all of a sudden these, here to for, staunch Conservative critics of trial lawyers have an epiphany. All of a sudden they get it. They realize that those stupid liberals had a really good idea, one that will maybe help them get even.
So don't worry if my story here upsets you. Hopefully you'll continue to spout the propagandistic drivel feed to you from birth by those who care only about themselves and don't give a sh!t about anybody else, and sleep in your nice warm bed, fat dumb and happy. Hopefully it will only happen to a few of you that you suddenly get it.
