A while ago I went on a couple of interviews and with one interview, the first thing this lady said to me is "by law, we must ask you what kind of status are you". I am like

Are they allow to do that, is that normal? Or does that come later, after you are hired?

Marital status? What kind of status?

residency / immigration status

i think that's allowed, in order to determine your eligibilty to work in this country. or if you need a sponsor.

It's so allowed man, you have no idea. If you even question its status of being allowed, that's grounds enough for immediate arrest.

Plus, what are you worried about anyway? Lose your green card, Pedro?
