Law Question concerning job interviews.

A while ago I went on a couple of interviews and with one interview, the first thing this lady said to me is "by law, we must ask you what kind of status are you". I am like

Are they allow to do that, is that normal? Or does that come later, after you are hired?

i think that's allowed, in order to determine your eligibilty to work in this country. or if you need a sponsor.

It's so allowed man, you have no idea. If you even question its status of being allowed, that's grounds enough for immediate arrest.
