Actually it’s more complicated than that. Long before the internet, when I used to walk my dog at night, I carried a Sony radio to listen to talk radio. There was a local station that had a leftist named Bernie Ward on, before it became known he had some dark secrets that cost him his reputation and job, and who used to end his show saying that.

The reason I asked for forgiveness was that I could never determine what the expression meant and came up with the one that I used in this post, that it’s easier to accuse people of things that are evil they would never want you to say than it is to ask permission to say them.

And since I was accusing somebody of smearing others using an expression I was unsure of the meaning, I asked forgiveness if I was using it wrong rather that doing the work of seeing if I could look up the expression’s real meaning.

Apparently my interpretation was actually incorrect, at least as expressed here:
