Laundry Rooms and Acceptable Behavior

So the situation is this:

There are 5 dryers, 3 of them are in use. I have 2 loads of washing machined clothing that needs to be dryed, so I need 2 dryers (the dryers are not that good). There is one empty dryer which I take, and then there is another dryer, which has just a coat and a pair of gloves in it which has been sitting there for 5-10 minutes. I move the dry coat/gloves out of that dryer and onto a chair, which again, had finished 5-10 minutes before I need the dryers and proceed to put my other load of wash in the dryer. When I come back (50 minutes later), I find my wet clothes (from the dryer that I removed the coat from) sitting on the chair and thrown behind the dryers and the dryer's time run down to 0. Was it acceptable to move the dry coat and gloves out of the dryer after they had sat there for 5-10 minutes?

Cliffs:
-Need dryers
-1 empty, 1 finished it's load 5-10 minutes before I needed it.
-I removed coat/gloves from dryer, put them on a chair and place my stuff in said dryer
-Jerk comes back and removes my clothes and puts them on a chair and behind dryers, allows dryer's time to run down to 0.
-Is it acceptable to remove clothing after 5-10 minutes and the other dryers are full?

Sure was, assuming you placed them together on a clean surface. I do it all the time if the owner doesn't return within 5-10 minutes after the machine is finished with his/her load of laundry.

Yes, it was a clean chair. I could have been an ass and just thrown it into the giant pile.

uh, i dont' think you need ATOT to call this one.

I figured as much. Just clarifying the situation with myself and venting frustrations like a lot of other people do here.

In the 4 months I've been doing it this way, I've never had a problem. I always figured it was understood among people that if you aren't there to take your stuff, after at least 5 minutes, the next person has a right to move the dry clothes to a clean counter/chair and use the dryer for themselves. If I had pulled the coat out and it had still been wet, I would have just walked to the other laundry room in the next building (connected underground), but the coat was dry. Just a case of someone being a douchebag.

As for not watching my clothes, I was also waiting for a pizza, so I needed to be in a place where I could get a cell signal; the laundry machines are in the basement, so no signal for my cell phone.

I was about 15 minutes late to get my laundry out of the dryer once. When I got to to laundry room some girl was folding my clothes and setting them on a table. :D

That made me LOL.

If you folded them, placed them neatly on clean chair, the dude was an @ss.

I didn't fold them (since it was only a coat and gloves), but I did put them on a chair so that they weren't hanging off. I think it was a girl anyway based on the size of the coat and the skinny, long gloves. Either way, grr.... just an annoyance to end this otherwise awesome day.

This was always a problem in the dorms. Some people get all pissed when you touch their clothes...well F that. Don't hog the washer or dryer when other people obviously need it. If you don't want your clothes touched, set your alarm clock for the same time as the dryer to remind you to come back. I always moved stuff if I needed to, given an appropriate grace period (5-10 minutes).

I never have found it a problem. Apparently, I found the one jerk living in the dorm. Whatever, I won't let it ruin my otherwise awesome day (went snowboarding for the first time, had tons of fun, etc).

If the owner of the clothes is not there when the machine stops, I'd remove them at that point. I wouldn't wait 5 - 10 minutes.
He/she was an ass for messing with you stuff.
When I didn't have a washer and dryer I'd take the newspaper and some beers to the laundromat. I'd sit outside where I could see inside and drink my beer and read my newspaper.

I KNEW it was a girl from your original description. Don't know why you all thought it was a dude. That is totally cranky chick behavior. And most guys will cram the washers and dryers with as much clothes as possible.

If I came back into a laundromat and found my stuff removed and placed on the table, I'd shrug and appreciate that person's thoughtfulness and impatience. You shouldn't have to wait for someone to remove their stuff from a perfectly available machine.

Tonight, I came back to the laundry room to get my stuff out of the washing machine and put it in a dryer. A girl who was sitting in the laundry room told me she had been waiting for about 30 minutes for a dryer to open up (we have 12 dryers). Half of them were already done running, so I told her just to find one with not too many things in it and take them out. I found a dryer with 2 hand towels and she found a dryer with a few pairs of pants. We put them in nice little piles on the table. They were already cooled down, so its not like we did them any disservice by not folding them.

I came back an hour later to pick up my stuff, and both of our dryers had been emptied and all of our stuff was thrown all over the laundry room. In dirty puddles and stuff. I couldn't even find a few things. Argh. :|

So possibly one person was hogging TWO dryers for over half an hour. (Seems unlikely that it was two people at different times. Unless they talked to each other and agreed to be asses.) My faith in humanity is further eroded.

You know the solution of course. Next time, YOU throw the clothes all over the place if somebody leaves them there too long. :-D Honestly, what kind of person looks at the situation and determines this course of action is the correct one? Their mama needs to be slapped.

In my building's laundry room, I usually leave a basket on top of the washer or dryer in case I get stuck and don't return on time.

I forgot my clothes in the dryer once...and this dryer's timer was broken, so it just went until you opened the door...and then I went to bed because I'm so absentminded and I wasn't feeling well...and they were still in the running dryer 15 hours later...oops.

Throwing someones clothes all over the place is horse ******, that guy was a douche.

On another note, is it acceptable behavior to go into a laundry room with 6 washers and 6 dyers and use every single washer, then use every single dryer? Pretty much making it so no one can use the laundry room for a good 2 hours?

I would think the limit of acceptability would be to use half to 2/3 of the currently available washers, although if there are only two available, then it'd be okay to use them both. Using more than that doesn't necessarily make you a jerk, it's just a matter of manners and courtesy. On the other hand, the sooner you get all your stuff done, the sooner those washers are free for other people who may have several loads too.
