Seoul (AFP) - A top-ranking North Korean military official has threatened a nuclear strike on the White House and Pentagon after accusing Washington of raising military tensions on the Korean peninsula.

The threat came from Hwang Pyong-So, director of the military's General Political Bureau, during a speech to a large military rally in Pyongyang Sunday on the anniversary of the armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War.

Hwang, who holds the rank of vice marshal in the Korean People's Army, said a recent series of South Korea-US military drills, one of which included the deployment of a nuclear-powered US aircraft carrier, had ramped up tensions.

"If the US imperialists threaten our sovereignty and survival... our troops will fire our nuclear-armed rockets at the White House and the Pentagon -- the sources of all evil," Hwang said in his speech broadcast Monday on state television.

Hwang is just a kiss ass bucking for a promotion to Marshal.

I question the lethality of their nuclear devices if they have to fire two rockets. One for the white house, the other for the pentagon :D

No big deal...we have a bunch of our own politicians right here at home selling the same kind of snake oil to get elected/re-elected.

They would be doing us a favor. Just make sure congress is in session and the president is actually in the white house.

all it takes is one rocket for it to be a problem. while i typically laugh at NK and their ballsy threats, nuclear warfare is no good.

About the only way they could hope to get a nuke to the White House is by UPSing it. Although I doubt it would be much of a threat once UPS got done with it.

Given the quality of their intermediate range rockets, let alone the long range/ICBM; your concern is highly over-rated :)

The real concern would be them missing DC and instead blowing some other poor city to hell and gone. Canada should be very afraid.

NK has come a long way.

All they need is a little help from another super power and they might try something.

I wouldn't totally laugh this off.

Ballsy? They have no intention of carrying them out (in this case, it is impossible) because they know exactly what would happen if they did carry them out. It is all an act by them for the benefit of their population.

I suspect that firing two rockets would be to have some measurable chance that at least one did not land back in North Korea.

LOL +1

When NK can actually hit SK with an ICBM, the US might start "worrying" about these threats.

The interesting thing is they'll no doubt one day be able to. Then what happens? Do the Koreans wisen up and act more mature because it's become a far more dangerous game, or do we have to have to figure out a way to go in there and clean house?

The interesting question is, if they fired one at us and it landed off the coast in the Atlantic ocean, would our response be to decimate NK? (obviously if they hit us it would).

Overshoot?

Either way; the US response should be to go and clean house of all their missile launch platforms that have been targeted. Sub and air launched Tomahawks.

Both China and Russia will have been able to identify the trajectory of the missile. given the amount of time it would take for a missile to arrive into the US ADIZ areas, I am sure that both of them would be on the horn immediately after launch and trajectory are determined to proclaim their innocence. That would allow us to let them know of the cruise missile launch plans so they do not get panicky. Inform Japan and SK also so they can e prepared to a conflict.

Any follow on launches would then have the C&C targeted.

/edit might be better to take out the C&C at the same time to reduce the ability to issue follow on launches if not already ordered.

The only way they are going to be able to launch anything is if someone else gives them one (and it has to be a gift, because they can't afford to buy it), the facility to launch from, and the personnel to staff the site.

And, in the event they actually do get the capabilities for this kind of stuff, their ridiculous posturing will stop. They know, even if they won't admit it, that they can say this stuff because everyone knows they can't. But, if they got the ability to actually launch of of their like 10 warheads anywhere near a civilized country and then threatened to, they would find their sites being destroyed.

The NK regimes number one goal is to stay in power. Attacking the US mainland (especially with a nuke) would be about the quickest way for that regime to be obliterated.

Exactly. Russia gave the hillbillies in Eastern Ukraine the weapons to hit planes at 33,000ft.

And in today's reality where information gets stolen so easily, who knows what manufacturing & specification documentation is freely traveling around.
