the SFF forums is kinda empty right now so i figger i try here.

a friend of mine said u should remove the battery from a laptop when you're on ac power for extended periods of time. is that true? doesn't sound possible thoug, what happens if u trip the ac cord?

Sure it's possible, but it would indeed die if you knocked the power cable out.

I don't see why it would matter though. Besides, doesen't the battery charge while your on AC power?

I just leave mine in...like you mention, if the power cord comes out it will die...

On the other hand, if you're using it as a desktop replacement you might as well pull out the battery so the charging circuit isn't wasting power and generating extra heat...

Some people think that if you leave the battery in while it's charged eventually it will get damaged because the charging circuit gets 'confused' as to whether it's really charged or not. I'm not sure how true this is. I take mine out to save weight and to minimize the charge/discharge cycles the battery goes through.

yea im not sure about this either. wont it mess up the battery since you're basically recharging it (while using ac power) when its not discharged yet?

Once it hits 100% I believe the battery just goes through conditioning and runs off the adapter.

It doesn't get hot at all.

I would agree after the battery is charged most chargers shut down internally as not to damage the battery cells..

I think you'll damage the battery if you completely discharge it.

I could be wrong.

If leaving in the battery will harm it's lifespan, wouldn't there be some type of warning ? Either via manufacturer or even an computer type article?

oh another question, what would happen if your battery was at 80% and you were using ac power. then ur battery would start charging right? so what if you then shut off your laptop while your battery is at 90% and not fully charged? would that affect the life of the battery in any way?

the battery starts getting trickle charged which is not the best thing for the battery.

most notebooks continue to charge the battery if they're still plugged into the wall, even while off. i wouldn't recommend not charging it all the way up

so do you recommend that i remove the battery when using ac power? otherwise i'd be charging hte battery before its fully discharged
