I have ISDN and i will wait a while before upgrading to ADSL, i may get cable..i live in London and although ADSL has been "rolled out" i have got no ordering info.

Like ISDN i will bide my time until i am certain that i am on the right track. I would like to host a game server though, and im not sure if ADSL will give me the capacity to host a 12/14 player CS server.

Just heard some great news regarding latency:

<< ADSLuk have learnt that the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB modems currently in trial and soon to be launched to an eager public are to use Fast Packet Mode modulation on the BT ADSL platform. The is in contrast the the Ethernet service which will be using an Interleaved modulation.
What this means for customers is that the Ethernet service will offer high availability and resilience connections at the expence of latency which currently sits at around 60ms between the customer router and the ISP router. The Fast Packet Mode modulation promises to be faster although on noisier lines there may be more signal loss.

This goes some way to alleviate the fears of the gaming community who had feared that all the services would have high latency which can be detremental to the performance on on-line games such as Quake III.

I just got off the phone with BT, they have promised that they will have ADSL install in my house at the end of august. I just hope they keep their word now. They said its been delayed till then, because of software problems with the USB Modems.

The means that the current software they have developed doesn't screw you computer up quite as much as they would like.

Don't worry, by the time they are finished it should meet the "Microsoft Windows Driver Standard of Bullshit" seal of approval.

cobain,

Did they specify which August? :)

Well they told me not to get Home highway, as I would have to see the 12 month contract out before I could switch to ADSL. So getting another phone line till then. As my brother never gets of the net now its free.

The Killfile six step plan:

1.) Forget silly ever-delayed xDSL services.

2.) Phone BT, order Home Highway (£50 conversion) on the BT Together plan (£40pm).

3.) Wait for BT to screw up instalation, then enjoy a months line rental free for every day or part day it's delayed by - I got £160 back on my bill this way.

4.) Plug in Netgear ISDN Router. (£220.)

5.) Get Freeserve Time Unlimited account. (£10 pm)

6.) Enjoy 24/7 128K connection and 70ms pings for £50 a month - now. And thats 128K , not "512k as long as no-one else in your neighbourhood is using it too". Oh yeah, and you can share the connection on your network.

I'm down in cardiff. BT told me that home highway was a bad idea for me, as I would have to see the 12 months out of the contract and I was due to have ADSL install next month
