Latest Intel RST driver and trim??

Hello all, it's been a while since I had a chance to get on this forum and I basically put my computer away for a year. Now that I'm back I wanted to make sure my SSD was working the best it could so I updated the firmware to 02M3 and I loaded the new SSD toolbox Ver. 2 and all seems well but I do have another question if there's anybody out there?

Is the new driver for the Intel Matrix Rapid storage technology necessary (10.6.0.1022)? Also the instructions in the toolbox say that with Win 7 in AHCI that the the OS has native support that the tool box is not necessary? Could somebody please explain this to me? I thought I had a handle on it before I went overseas but after a year I'm not so sure anymore. I'd like to set up my SSD properly and hopefully forget about it for a while.
Thanks for the help.

Jimminy Crickets.. jk jk. People say put it on AHCI , but also some say choose RAID or IDE in the BIOS. Well my dads cyberpowerpc "lol" we also got him 128GB A-DATA 6Gbps , I did a quick test with hd tune, and he gets 375mbps
Windows 7 index however gave him a 7.5

His BIOS is set to RAID or IDE. Not shure!
Windoz7 startup isnt impressive the way some of you talk about 10 second boot ups,, man it took more then 10 seconds or 20 seconds for that matter,, like 30 seconds or soo for bootup. 😱

Im scared to change his BIOS to AHCI , and some s*** hits the wall and kapooof I messed up his rig, he will get upset,, hes 69 I need to respect his rig.

The RST driver is not necessary. Intel Toolbox is also not necessary for Win7. Their sentence about 'native support' is about Win7's support of TRIM. The Toolbox's optimizer helpls WinXP users since it doesn't support TRIM. Switching between IDE mode and ACHI in the BIOS can cause Win7 to blue-screen without preparing it before hand.

You already did as much as I would do which is the firmware update. If you're system is running fine and you're happy, it's best to leave it be... unless you like pushing things until it just breaks. 🙂

Isn't the IRST driver needed for those who use RAID and have to enable write-back cash to increase performance?

Razel Dazel is correct on this one. Thats what I was getting at, not worth it to change to AHCI and BSOD and crap in our pants. If its working , no need to fix it !

I don't know what SSD you have but I think that the vertex 2's do not like the RST 10 drivers. You'll have to use the RST 9 ones.

Thanks for all the replies!!
I have the bios set to AHCI and installed the RST driver since I installed the drive with a fresh Win7. There is someplace (i forget) where you can change the driver in Win7 from the AHCI driver to allow windows to handle the trim. I've been reading for hours trying to find this but can't remember where.

couple of quick points here.

RST and MSAHCI drivers BOTH support TRIM pass-through and BOTH can be used in single drive or raid setups(though you lose TRIM pass-through for any members of an array).
RST generally gives slightly stronger performance than MSAHCI(especially at deeper q-depths).
If you have already installed the OS in AHCI mode and the RST drivers are installed?.. then you either use them(since they would now be running the show).. or delete them to revert back to the default MSAHCI. No reg hacks or other tricks required.
