"The problem with the French is that they don't have a word for entrepreneur."

George W. Bush, discussing the decline of the French economy with British Prime Minister Tony Blair

for those of you who dont know...entrepreneur is a French word. Comes from old French. Always been there and always has been a french word.

Anyone think that the meaning is somewhat true (that they lack individual innovation, entrepreneurs, whatever)? It's probably more true for Japan and maybe other Asian countries moreso than France/Europe but may still be applicable.

Three points.

One. Snopes was unable to confirm or deny the quote with the person who said she heard it. The denial came from Blair's office, hence Roberts' comment above.

Two. If true, it was said awhile ago, so it it hardly's Bush's latest blunder.

Three. France has historically been a bastion of small businesses. As has been noted, "entrepeneur" is a French word! As recently as 1956, a political party representing the interests of small businesses, the Poujadists, gained 52 seats and over 2 1/2 million votes in the French general elections.
