I have my 2 computers networked together with about 50 feet of CAT5 crossover cable. Both computers have 100 mbps NICS in them, and I have the computer set to use the 100mpps speed. Copying large files (mp3, etc.) over in windows goes very quickly and am satisfied with that.
I have noticed that I get very different pings in games when I am playing a 2 player LAN game. Here are some example pings for the computer not running the server (the computer that connects to the game on the other system)
Pings
Quake 2: less than 10ms
Half-Life: Average 10-20
Soldier of Fortune: Average 15-25
I am consistent with the networking console commands I use in each game (Ex: rate=25000, lantency=negative 10% of my ping).
Is the reason Quake2 has such a lower ping because of its net code is considered the best? Are the pings I am getting a function of each individual game's networking code, or can something else be done?
Yeah, I know a ping of 20ms is great, but I just thought it would be better on a LAN. You can tell a difference on the computer with the 20ms ping.
