Latency and roommates

So I share a cable modem connection with a two roommates. One of them uses the connection like it's her TV sometimes and it totally kills my ping. We're taking from 30ms up to 600+ms. I can't exactly tell her to stop as it's a shared connection. It's just really annoying when I'm in the middle of a game and she starts watching something....

I would really like a router that would enable me to limit the bandwidth she can use so I don't get lagged out of my TF2 killing sprees.

Any ideas?

Buy a "gaming" router that lets you: limit the bandwidth she can use so you don't get lagged out of your TF2 killing sprees.

Disclaimer: I haven't had a reason to buy one, so check reviews first.

For anyone who doesn't know - "gaming" routers like the DGL4300 just have a user-friendly QoS frontend (and really REALLY bright LEDs). You can usually get the same features for a lower cost if you're willing to learn how to set up QoS yourself.

If you have a DD-WRT compatible router, that supports QoS. Not sure about Tomato, but I would expect it does as well.

No chick that spends her time on the net watching tv would be hot.

Same thing happens to me quite often. I deal with it by unplugging the cable modem until the other users think the net is down. After a few minutes they usually give up at what they were doing. When I plug it back in I am able to play at least an hour or so before they bother trying again.

I would assume roomate lbandwidth hog is involved with 3rd roomate, now if roomate #3 is also female things get real interesting but no real guy is lucky enough for that. Back to topic how about a faster connection?

Yeah, I'm pretty surprised that your connection is getting maxed out by streaming television. Are they watching HD or something?

I found out my router is DD-WRT compatible but have no clue how to install it. Edit: seems pretty easy, may do this tonight lol lol lol. Got new roommates moving in and one is a lesbo.

Here is the search to see if yours is.

I have DD-WRT installed on my router, and despite it having QoS protocols, they don't seem to work all that well for my router. If I use programs to define it anyway. QoS by MAC address seems to work though.

Still can't get port forwarding to work at all.

She's a lesbian and more manly then womanly. I think she's streaming basketball games. Or maybe porn. Lesbian basketball porn? Who knows.

Thanks guys, I'll look into DD-WRT or getting a router that supports QoS.

Tomato-WRT is easier to use than DD-WRT, but doesn't support as many types of routers.

in college one of my house mates would always have kazaa open destroying our internet connection. I would just unplug his cable then go yell at him.
