Lately my monitor has been flickeriing and I smell burning.

something may be overheating or you may have a dust problem. Take it outside and take some canned air to it.

I remember a while ago my video card was overheating. I didn't get flickering but lots of choppiness. And I would occassionally smell a slight burning coming from comp.

cat hair! my monitor draws the cat to it like a bug to light... he loves the warm spot and spends hours sleeping up there if the monitor is left on.
