wow, what an excellent game! the RPG elements were seamlessly mixed in. a few of the skills were only useful late game, but then again those were only accessible late game.

the takedowns are an excellent addition that rewards melee stealth play over distance sniping. chaining takedowns is epic, although it does expose you to enemy fire. still, it's pretty awesome when you can do it.

the only consistently annoying part, i'll say, was keeping your money up. granted i didn't buy many weapons, but if you use the LMG a lot, you will burn through cash fast since not many enemies carry LMGs.

one other small annoyance was that you could fail a mission if you went too far away from its location. i thought this was a poor design choice, since the game is open world, and you should be able to go anywhere and do anything at any time. so whenever i got a mission, i just did it right away.

aside from those gripes - holy crap, amazing. the characters, the enemies - every major character was well developed. the only exception to that, i'll say, is the end villain voyt, since vaas got so much more time/attention. that being said, it was still made very clear very quickly that he was a super evil, bad dude.

the interesting part was that your character has to make some ugly choices as well in pursuit of his end goal. at the very end, when you have to torture your brother, i was like "this is not cool" (i always play lawful good in RPG games, hah).

also, the very end-game choices were interesting. i chose to save my friends instead of joining the rakyat, but i watched the rakyat ending and i was like "whooaaaaaaaa". in both and impressed and "that's f'ed up" way.

if ubisoft continues this style gameplay for far cry 4, they'll have another winner on their hands.

i still wish uplay weren't necessary though. what an annoying program.

things I would like to see:

- a "smarter" LOD system that takes advantage of PC architechture better. The original Crysis has far less pop-in, for example. Far Cry 3 is constantly redrawing the forest around you. Far Cry 3 does have better assets and vanilla textures though.

- much more variety to NPC character models. you see the same 3 or 4 faces copy pasted everywhere in Far Cry 3. this kind of thing kills immersion for me.

- either make the RPG elements more meaningful or just take them out entirely. I feel like I could complete the entire Far Cry 3 without using any of the "abilities" I unlocked which makes grinding for them pretty nigh useless. I could also do without the superfluous hunting meta games.

I have been enjoying Far Cry 3 also, but I am stuck in the sunken ship and can't get past the attacking guy no matter what I do. I am ready to abandon the game after dozens to failures on this level.

I had so much cash I was constantly leaving behind loot chests because I couldn't pick them up, even with a fully upgraded wallet.

Agreed. A lot of FPS/RPG hybrid games seem hell-bent on adding "grinding" pseudo-RPG mechanics purely for the sake of padding which ends up adding little difference to gameplay. And the hunting meta-games never made any sense to me either. Tiger skin or dingo pelt is "stronger" than buffalo hide? Um, nope... FC3 wasn't a bad game, in fact it had a good plot & voice acting (especially Vaas), but a lot of stuff felt like deliberate "padding". Most fun occurs in first 3 hours. I found the boss QTE based fights just plain tedious (as was the lack of quick-save during longer missions).

I absolutely hated the ambient music in that game when you were just strolling around, it was so loud and obnoxious it got onto my nerves. I had to eventually turn it off completely, and put it back on for main missions. Of course the genius devs at Ubisoft didn't think of adding an option to lower the in game music volume instead of just "OFF".

I loved the music in that part where you burn down the marijuana fields. that was such a unique experience. For some reason I only got 40% of the way through the game before i gave it up. Should go back.

Not to be argumentative but I loved this game. And it seems like the more attributes you add, the more people the game will appeal to. So it's kind of like, if you want to blow off the RPG stuff (which I certainly understand) then go ahead. You just may not progress as easily or what have you. I like the ability to upgrade stuff. Its just another gameplay option. And then sometimes when I feel like just blowing stuff up, then I don't bother with it for a few days/hours, etc...

This is almost the perfect game for me. It's linear and has a story, but also has an open-world feel to it. It's a shooter, but it's an RPG like Stalker and the Deus-ex games. You can use stealth but alot of fun can be had with guns blazing, etc.

Yeah, that was one of my only gripes with the game although I usually found the area you could wander around a mission area was still pretty generous.

I'd like to see NPC appearances and voicesets a bit more varied in FC4 and for the game to be a bit more difficult, but in spite of those things FC3 was still a massively fun game and the complaints minor at best imo.
